Who Receives Fingerprinting Results? Clarify the Destination Before Your Appointment

wpusername1185Fingerprinting

A fingerprinting appointment is only one step in a screening request. Before you schedule, find out where the results are supposed to go, and whether you are authorized to receive a copy yourself. The employer, licensing board, agency, or other requesting organization sets the instructions for its process. A provider should not guess at the recipient based on the type of check or the applicant’s preference.

Ohio Security & Investigations offers appointment based WebCheck and ink card fingerprinting options. Confirming result routing ahead of time can help prevent a mismatch between the appointment and the organization’s requirements. It does not guarantee a particular result, delivery time, or acceptance by the recipient.

Ask the requester to identify the destination

Contact the organization that asked you to be fingerprinted. Request its exact instructions in writing if possible, including the intended recipient’s full name or agency, any destination or identifying details it requires, and whether the submission must be associated with a particular job, license, or purpose. Also ask whether results are sent directly to that organization, made available to you, or handled another way under its process.

Do not assume that “send it to my employer” is precise enough. A large employer may have multiple departments or locations, while a licensing request may require a board or agency rather than an individual contact. If the request came through a recruiter or intermediary, verify the instructions with the organization responsible for the screening.

Clarify personal access and authorization

A common point of confusion is whether the applicant will receive the results. There is no safe universal assumption: access and routing depend on the requesting organization’s process and the applicable requirements. Ask who is authorized to receive the information, whether you will get a separate copy, and what steps, if any, are needed to authorize disclosure.

For example, hypothetically, an applicant may be told by a prospective employer to complete fingerprints but may hope to obtain the report personally first. The employer’s instructions may call for results to go to a designated recipient instead. The applicant should ask the employer what route it requires rather than asking the fingerprinting provider to redirect results or relying on another person’s past experience.

Share only the information needed for the authorized request. If instructions are unclear or conflict, pause and ask the requester to resolve them before the appointment.

Confirm the check and submission details together

Destination is one part of the request, not a substitute for the rest. Ask the requesting organization to specify the required check type, such as BCI, FBI, or combined BCI/FBI, along with the reason code, forms, identification requirements, and recipient details. Requirements can differ by purpose, so another applicant’s instructions may not apply to yours.

Bring or have available the materials the requester specifies. If you have a form, review it for the correct recipient and purpose before arrival. For ink cards, confirm who is responsible for completing, mailing, or submitting the card and whether the requester supplied a particular form. Do not presume that results are instant or that a completed appointment means a clearance or eligibility decision; the receiving organization handles its own next steps.

Schedule after the instructions are settled

Before traveling, contact Ohio Security & Investigations to confirm an appointment and explain which fingerprinting option the requester specified. Provide the relevant instructions so the appointment can be discussed against the request; the organization that requires the check remains the authority on its recipient and screening requirements. If you are unsure whether a particular submission route is available, ask before booking rather than relying on an assumption.

When the destination, authorization, check type, and required paperwork are clear, you can arrive with a better defined request and fewer unanswered questions.
